Order or Customize itMitochondria are the providers of energy for cellular processes. These are membrane-bound organelles and, like the nucleus, have a double membrane. TUnlike the smooth outer membrane, the inner membrane is highly convoluted, forming folds called cristae. The cristae greatly increase the inner membrane surface area allowing for additonal energy production.
The idealized model shown here represents the convoluted shape of this vital organelle. The inner light effect is meant to illustrate the energy produced by the respiratory apparatus composed of proteins, cofactors, and membranes.
